Vergil as a person seems almost unreachable. Aloof and distant almost as a rule, he holds an aura of untouchability. It is as though there is a simple barrier between himself and others that just cannot be overcome. Or perhaps it would be more fitting to call it a tower, what with his tendency to look down on anyone and everyone. On the occasions that this silent figure deigns to speak, it is often with more than a hint of annoyance or condescension. He is nowhere near as loud about his distastes as his brother, but he still finds ways to make his opinions known.

The son of Sparda is not without a heart though. As much as he loathes his humanity it remains a part of him. As such, while he is not usually a pleasant person, there are moments where he caves to the urges of his conscious and does something legitimately good. He may, for instance, give a word or two of advice to someone who seems to be in desperate need. Or he may lend more direct aid, depending on the situation. Such tasks are often done with a hint of exasperation, and Vergil goes far out of his way to veil his good will with arrogance or words of disdain. Words of thanks given after the fact are shrugged off especially. The man has an image to maintain, after all.

While he seems the mirror opposite of Dante, the two are not as dissimilar as one might think. In fact, once one gets past the stoic manner by which he handles all things, they can be discovered to share a great many significant traits. For one, Vergil shares a tendency to fight. He does not always directly aggress, but if a duel goes down he will return fire whole-heartedly. He can also be surprisingly rebellious at times, though like many things he displays this with more subtlety. He even finds he enjoys a little banter like his brother, though his particular brand of trash-talk tends to be a bit more dignified. Probably most prominent is his unwavering confidence in all things he does. He is able to be the person he is because he holds no fear or uncertainty in his actions. He makes his own path, his own way.

HISTORY:
Once upon a time, a rebellious demon knight and a human woman bore twin sons. Vergil was the elder of these two by scant minutes, and despite his odd existence between mortality and demonhood he had a relatively happy childhood. There was even a time when he got along with his sibling, Dante. But those days ended so many years ago, when the demons came for Eva. It was in the shadow of her demise that he came to know how powerless he was. How incapable he was of protecting anything, even his own mother. The young son of Sparda blamed his humanity, cursing it as weakness. He made no attempt to return to his brother, whom he had been separated from in the attack. He would instead embrace his demonic heritage, vowing to never be so weak again.

Years later he would find his chance. While embroiled in his quest he was approached by a strange man named Arkham. Initially Vergil did not trust the stranger - and indeed he never fully would - but he brought with him information that might prove integral to his life’s mission. Information concerning the Temen-ni-gru: a massive tower that served as a tunnel between the mortal realm and the demesne of the demons. He could honestly have cared less about that, but his attention was brought to what lay within. At the heart of Temen-ni-gru’s Forbidden Land, tempering the seal that held the worlds apart, was Sparda’s own sword. Vergil aimed to take the power it held for himself and further amplify his demonic strength. It was for that reason that he agreed to Arkham’s plan, raising the tower and enticing a confrontation from his brother so that he might claim his half of the Perfect Amulet.

Vergil did complete the Amulet, even if it awakened Dante’s latent powers in the process. He even made it to the seal after dealing with Arkham, having sensed the man’s opposing motives well before they could be played out. And yet, in the same instance, he far underestimated what the scarred stranger was capable of. After being duped into a second duel with Dante, the mastermind played his hand. Both siblings, as well as the interloper Lady, were entirely outplayed, and Arkham was seemingly left to take the Force Edge’s power for himself. He was unable to inherit the power of Sparda though, and in the end his body changed into an unseemly abomination that lacked control over its newfound strength. Dante and Vergil teamed up to put down the threat, and then promptly turned on each other again for ownership of the sword. This time, it was the younger twin who would emerge victorious. Repelling any attempt to save him, Vergil fell headlong into the demon world, all the while urging his brother to flee before he too was trapped by Temen-ni-gru’s impending collapse.

Vergil’s memories from that point on get foggy. He recalls his arrival into the realm of demons. He also remembers his fight with Mundus, the sovereign of demons, and how he soundly lost. But much to his surprise he simply....awoke. For reasons he cannot explain he was back on Earth, with nothing but a year of lost time to show for it. Unsure of what to make of this, and perhaps even a little frightened somewhere on the inside, he gravitated to the final shred of his old life that remained: Dante. Using the funds he had accumulated over his ten years of solitude, he tracked down his brother’s whereabouts and then paid his own way into the academy. He has no real goals at this time, other than to carve his own destiny as he always had.
